Mastocytosis & Monoclonal MCAS

Check our post on Mastocytosis & Monoclonal MCAS for RARE Revolution Magazine’s social media takeover on Rare Disease Day 2025.

Mastocytosis is a condition where your body has an unusual buildup of mast cells in one or more parts. Mast cells help protect you, but when you have mastocytosis, these cells misbehave.

There are four main groups: one that affects the skin (Cutaneous Mastocytosis), one that can affect organs such as the bone marrow and GI tract and other organs (Non-Advanced Systemic Mastocytosis), and two that more seriously affect the function of key body systems (Advanced Systemic Mastocytosis (AdvSM) and Mast Cell Sarcoma).

Monoclonal Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MMAS) is a rare haematologic disease characterised by a small gene change that causes mast cell activation symptoms without skin involvement and with a normal to low mast cell burden.

Symptoms can differ between patients and can be debilitating or life-threatening.

Mast Cell Diseases can occur in both adults and children.

We also support Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and the genetic trait Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HaT), which are quite recently identified and are and rarely diagnosed.
